Building Your Audience Library

Build a reusable Audience library in Jasper by defining focused groups that you can combine for different content needs. A library of targeted audiences enables you to tailor content for multiple groups without maintaining a separate Audience for every possible combination.

Use atomic audiences instead of composite audiences

An atomic audience describes an audience at one altitude , such as an industry, region, role, persona, or lifecycle stage. Define it once, then combine it with other audiences when you generate content.

A composite audience blends several groups into one profile, such as “Financial Services CMO and operations buyer.” It covers only that one combination, so you cannot reuse its parts independently. Instead, create separate audiences for Financial Services, a CMO, and an operations buyer. You can then select the combination that fits each asset.

Use multiple altitudes

An altitude is a level of segmentation. Higher altitudes describe broader groups (usually with more headcount), while lower altitudes add detail about subsets of those groups. Combining audiences from different altitudes gives Jasper more useful context while keeping each audience reusable.

  1. Industry or vertical: Financial Services
  2. Region: EMEA
  3. Title: Chief Marketing Officer
  4. Persona: Content Operations Lead
  5. Lifecycle stage: Renewal

Start with the levels your team already uses to segment its market. Two altitudes work well, and three can add more nuance. Jasper supports up to 4 per generation. You can add levels later without rebuilding the audiences you already have.

Choose a starting point

  1. If you are getting started: Create one vertical or region and two or three personas. For example: Financial Services, Executive, and Practitioner.
  2. If you are building out your library: Add one level at a time as campaigns require it. You might add a region or split a persona by seniority.
  3. If you already segment in detail: Mirror the model you use elsewhere. For example: Regional Banking, EMEA, Chief Risk Officer, and Renewal Stage.

Choose a primary audience

Your primary audience sets the framing, structure, and emphasis of the content. Secondary audiences add the needs and priorities of other people the content should also reach. Secondary audiences are peers and do not have an order among themselves.

  1. When you mix altitudes, use the broadest audience—such as an industry or region—as the primary audience, then add roles or personas as secondary audiences.
  2. When all selected audiences are at the same altitude, make the group the asset is most intended to persuade your primary audience.
  3. Use the same library with different primary audiences for different assets when your goal changes.

Jasper looks for common ground between the selected audiences. The resulting content should reflect each group’s priorities without naming the audiences or addressing them one at a time.

What to include in each audience

Describe what the group cares about, not only who they are. Include the details Jasper can use when it combines audiences:

  1. Language or power phrases that resonate with the group
  2. Framing to avoid
  3. Success indicators
  4. Likely objections
  5. Pain points

Keep each audience focused on its own group. For example, a persona audience without vertical-specific details can combine cleanly with any vertical audience.

Convert an existing composite audience

Jasper does not split an existing audience automatically. Create new atomic audiences from the source documentation you already use.

  1. Gather your persona documents, ideal customer profile materials, and segments from other tools.
  2. List the distinct groups inside each composite audience you use today.
  3. Sort those groups by altitude and choose the levels you need now.
  4. In Jasper, go to Jasper IQ > Audiences > Add Audience.
  5. Create one audience for each group using your source documentation.

Try different audience combinations

Use the same library with different primary and secondary selections to tailor an asset for different needs. In a Canvas document, open the Rewrite with new Audience(s) dropdown, update the audience selection, and select Create new asset. Compare the two versions to see how the audience mix changes the content.

If your team commonly writes for the same groups, you can set a multi-audience default in Workspace Settings > Generation Defaults. You can override that default when creating content.

Frequently asked questions

Should I combine personas into one audience?

No. Define each persona or group as its own audience, then combine them when generating content. This keeps each audience focused and reusable.

How do I decide which audience should be primary?

Choose the audience the content is most intended to reach. When you combine a broad group with more specific roles or personas, use the broad group as the primary audience and add the roles or personas as secondary audiences.

Do secondary audiences have a ranking?

No. The only hierarchy is primary and secondary. Secondary audiences are peers.

What happens when audiences conflict?

Jasper looks for common ground between your selected audiences. When there is no common ground, the primary audience takes priority.

A secondary audience is not coming through. What should I check?

Make sure its content guidance describes what that group cares about, including its priorities, likely objections, and pain points. Jasper builds on the common ground between the primary audience and each secondary audience.
